About Catherine Aitken Scotland
Catherine Aitken has been designing clothes and accessories from a very
tender age, she was taught the skill by her grandmother while growing
up in the Scottish city of Dundee. With a kilt-making uncle and other
relatives who loved to wear mohair and tweeds, it's no surprise that
Catherine went on to develop a love of tartans and traditional Scottish
textiles in her later years.
Catherine’s background is as a film and television producer having
worked in the industry for nearly fifteen years on cinema and tv drama,
documentary and commercials. Her design skills and film career came together
when she started producing handbags as a promotional tool for her company.
With so many people asking where they could buy the distinctive designs,
however, she was finally prompted to set up her own label, establishing
the Catherine Aitken Scotland online boutique in 2005. Catherine’s
work references the faded romanticism of antique postcards and images
of Scotland – carrying more than a hint of old-style glamour, and
her designs have recently been seen at some very starry events.
"All the muted and jewelled colours of the gorgeous textiles emulate
the Scottish landscape and make you think of everything from the elegance
of country ladies to that glorious Brigadoon notion of Scotland",
Catherine says.
Catherine has exhibited in New York and Los Angeles, and throughout
the UK. Her Collection have been sold to the US, Australia, Japan and
throughout Europe and the UK. The National Galleries of Scotland commissioned
Catherine to design a set of accessories to tie in with their Titian
Exhibition in 2005 and she also participated in the Gifted Exhibition
at the Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh in 2006. Other Exhibitions include
the Taleisin Gallery Swansea, Gifts for Men Stafford Gallery, Winter
Warmth in Park Gallery Falkirk and Lime Gallery Glasgow. She has showcased
twice at the Catwalk of Dressed To Kilt. The Collection has also been
covered by various magazines and newspapers at home and abroad - Elle,
She, Daily Mail, Sunday Times Magazine, The Guardian to name but a few,
as well as inflight magazines and web based fashion mags.
