DRAMA QUEEN COLLECTION

DRAMA QUEEN

For this Collection I have totally returned to my film industry roots. I realised that nearly all my designs are inspired by films I've seen and the actors in them so I combined favourite designs with  new ones and created the Drama Queen Collection.

Handbag Tippi for instance, is from the scene  I  remember most from The Birds - Tippi Hedren sitting on that bench outside the school while the Birds slowly start to group around her. The scene is so tense and with the underlying suggestion throughout the film that her character is causing the strange phenomenon, it makes you wonder what exactly is inside that large bag that she is carrying....  Well that's the view you take when you have an handbag obsession like mine!

And don't you just love the transformation of 'Aunt Charlotte' in Now Voyager?  As she glides through the cruise with one gorgeous outfit after another, not to mention the delightful range of elegant clutches that she has with her, you can't help but sigh. 'Don't lets ask for the moon, when we have the stars...'  Gets me every time.

But Katharine Hepburn is my fashion icon from that era.  I just love the way she combined her femininity with harsh masculine clothes that just emphasised her elegance even more. I try and re-create that with my designs, the rough and strong Harris Tweeds combined with silks and linens, the harsh and soft textures a delight to behold and to touch, a masculine/feminine of fashion.  And I love being able to use local cloths and leathers.  I was so happy when I found Peter Greigs in Kirkaldy, they have been spinning and weaving linen since the 1800s and wandering into their mill was like entering a treasure trove.  Of course, the vintage kimono fabrics are not Scottish!  But they are so beautiful, I couldn't resist - and it is recycling, one of my favourite things to do.

The fashion shoot for the Collection was great fun.   The beautiful model is Erin Daly who is also an exquisite jeweller - her designs can be found at www.facebook.com/erindalyjewellery

The photographer was Clare Dakin and Karen McGinn created the make-up.

All my work is limited edition, and I will be setting up a Gallery area on the boutique soon where individual pieces will be featured.  Don't hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions or are interested in a Bespoke handbag - just email info@catherineaitken.com

You can also make an appointment to visit the studio if you are in Edinburgh - just call 07799885417 - and you can see the stock and cloths from the Collection.

Thanks for visiting the online boutique.  Do come again!  Catherine Aitken

ABOUT CATHERINE

Catherine already has had one career as a successful film and television producer. Her love of designing and creating her own clothes and accessories fell by the wayside as her passion for producing film took hold, and it wasn't until she created handbags as a film promotional tool for a trip to Cannes Film Festival, that Catherine's love of making was rekindled.  That particular film never got made, but a new career was born instead, and Catherine gave up film production two years ago to go full time as a designer.

From her small studio in Leith, she creates designs that are sold through her internet boutique, into shops and galleries and at various events throughout the year.  Catherine was also commissioned  by the National Galleries of Scotland  to design a set of accessories to tie in with their Titian Exhibition and she also participated twice in the Gifted Exhibition at the Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh. Other Exhibitions include the Taleisin Gallery Swansea, Gifts for Men Stafford Gallery, Winter Warmth in Park Gallery Falkirk and Lime Gallery Glasgow. She has showcased twice on the Catwalk of Dressed To Kilt in New York. The Collection has also been covered by various magazines and newspapers at home and abroad - Elle, She, Daily Mail, Sunday Times Magazine, The Guardian to name but a few, as well as inflight magazines and internet fashion mags.
