"Well Plaid - Catherine Aitken's cool Harris Tweed number, in Hunting Macleod tartan, may settle the 'man bag' debate." So said the Daily Mail on 29th December as they added it to the top of their Wish List.

By a Lady for Ladies!

In 1846, Lady Dunmore had the Murray tartan copied by Harris weavers in tweed. This proved so successful that Lady Dunmore devoted much time and thought to marketing the tweed to her friends and then to improving the process of production. This was the beginning of the Harris Tweed Industry. Lady Dunmore introduced Harris Tweed to her hunting, fishing and shooting set. The tweed was then adopted by those in Queen Victoria's circle, and the image of the tweedy country gent was born. Harris Tweed was firmly established by the end of the 19th century. A fabulous product with historical, social and artistic value - it became a status symbol to possess it - and still is to this day. Harris Tweed must be made from 100 per cent pure virgin wool, dyed, spun and finished in the Outer Hebrides and hand woven by the islanders at their own homes in the islands of Lewis, Harris, Uist, Barra and their several purtenances.
